Eligibility for Membership Consideration
All juniors and seniors who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 92 (weighted) or above are sent letters informing them of having met the academic criterion for membership, and inviting them to continue the process of being considered for membership in the Allegany Limestone Chapter of the National Honor Society. Interested candidates will complete and submit a Candidate Form and Resume pertaining to character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The Candidate Form must be signed by the student and parent/guardian and turned in along with a Resume by the date stated on the application.
SELECTION OF MEMBERS
The final selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty
Council consisting of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter advisor is the
sixth, non-voting, ex-officio member of the Faculty Council.
Prior to the final selection, the following shall occur:
a. Students meeting the academic minimum (sent to NHS advisor by guidance) interested in membership will submit an
electronic resume and signed candidate form to the NHS advisor by the deadline. The applicant is responsible for
verifying the advisor received the resume in the correct format.
b. All high school faculty members of ALCS are invited to evaluate applicants. Applicants will be
evaluated on how the candidate exemplifies the NHS virtues of Scholarship, Leadership, Character,
and Service. Faculty members will reference the applicants' resume and evaluate how the candidate
has demonstrated the NHS virtues as a student at ALCS. Applicants will be scored in each virtue by
faculty members. Faculty members are also permitted to submit comments on candidates during
the evaluation process to provide further input to the faculty council.
c. The NHS advisor presents the High School Faculty evaluation form to the Faculty Council to be
voted on for membership. Faculty ratings are not to be considered as 'votes' or the sole determinants
of membership, but should be reported to the Faculty Council to add to their information when
considering selections. Before students are notified of selection or non-selection, the principal
reviews the recommendation of the voting Faculty Council. Once final approval has been given by
the principal, candidates are then notified regarding selection or non-selection by a letter. The
contents of the faculty evaluations and selection process by the Faculty Council is confidential.
